Humming birds are basically the residents of America that are found in the family Trochleae. These birds are the smallest among birds, most species measuring 7.5–13 cm in length. Indeed, the smallest extant bird species is a hummingbird, the 5 cm bee hummingbird weighing less than 2.5 g. Their name is hummingbirds because of the humming sound created by their beating wings which flap at high frequencies audible to human beings. They float in mid-air at rapid wing-flapping rates, typically around 50 times/second, allowing them also to fly at speeds exceeding 15 m/s. Hummingbirds can fly right, left, up, down, backwards, and even upside down. They are also able to hang by flapping their wings in a figure-8 pattern. They have a specialized long and tapered bill that is used to obtain nectar juice from the center of long, tubular flowers. The hummingbird’s feet are used for balance only, and are not used for hopping or walking. It is very difficult to evaluate population numbers since there are many different species extend over a large geographical area.

In addition to nectar juice, hummingbirds eat a variety of other items to get enough nutrition. The other resources of humming bird food we will discuss further:

Insects:

Hummingbirds may hunt insects in several ways, including gleaning or picking them from bark, flowers or leaves, hawking them in midair or plucking them from spider webs or sticky sap.

Sap:

When nectar juice is scarce, hummingbirds will sip tree sap from wells drilled by woodpeckers. While the tree sap is not as sweet as floral nectar juice, it still provides an able source of sucrose for a hummingbird’s energy needs. Sap that has dripped down and hardened on the tree trunk cannot be drunk, but the birds may pick insects from the sticky leftover part.

Pollen:

Hummingbirds do not directly consume pollen, but a great deal of pollen can be stuck to their tongues and bills when they sip nectar juice from flowers. Some of that pollen is ingested, and it can be a minor source of protein even though it wasn’t directly eaten.

Ashes and Sand:

Some hummingbirds have been observed eating ashes and sand in small quantities. These foods can be a good source of vital minerals and salts, but not much is needed to fulfill a hummingbird’s food. More close observation and study is needed to find how critical this type of food source may be for hummingbirds.
